The Back Staircase

I'm not sure what it is,
but I have always loved the idea of having a
back staircase into the kitchen.

source

Something about it just seems so sweet and quaint.
I can just imagine wandering down those steps in my bathrobe
to make coffee in the morning, can't you?

The kitchen above is from the movie Stepmom.
You can see the back staircase in the background and notice
how the staircase turns for the last few steps as you enter the kitchen.
I love this kitchen and the entire house, actually.
{This is one of my all time favorite movies ~ you must see it if you haven't already!}

If it's a winding staircase, then my heart really goes pitter-patter!

This last one is more modern, but lovely just the same.

My Grandmother lived in a farmhouse with a staircase into the kitchen.
I can remember it so vividly ~ I just loved that!

Do you have a back staircase or any memories of one?
I would love to hear about it!

  1. The nest to last picture looks like a doll house. A mini table and fridge but it is adorable. Step Mom is an all time favorite of mine as well.

  2. It's funny...when we built our home we were supposed to have a back staircase. We actually opted against it (mainly because it would eat up so much room in our family room and would have taken two walk-in closets out of my son's room). Now that we have lived here for more than ten years I regret that decision. I think it would have been very cool.

Yes, it would have been cool, Judy. It's hard to make those choices sometimes between what's practical and what our hearts would like!

  4. My love of old houses started due to a back staircase. When I was 15 I cleaned house for an elderly lady in a beautiful old home with 2 staircases. The central staircase in front was for the family, and the back staircase was for the staff (she had no live-in staff, but that was the intent of the home's design). There were so many things I loved about her home and it launched my passion for old houses. I will always remember that house and your post reminded me of it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! And yes, I love Step Mom! :)

Isn't it funny how certain memories just stick with us? I can see now that my passion for houses and decorating started at an early age too ~ I just didn't realize it then!

  5. That's one of my fav movies, and I so rarely watch TV or movies. So that's saying something. I'd forgotten all about it. I should see if it's on TV one of these days. No memories of a staircase here. But I love the idea as well.

I don't usually watch a movie more than once but I could watch STEPMOM over and over ~ it's great for a good cry, too!

  6. Our house in Kansas had a double stair case which lead into the kitchen. I loved it. You're so right. I could sneak down for a midnight snack or early in the morning without waking everyone down the hallway up. I miss that convenience. Great pics.

  8. I love all of these photos... a back staircase does sound like fun! It also seems to make more sense... after all isn't the kitchen so often the heart of the home? :-)

Blue Kitchen Cabinets 2017

I have done a couple posts on kitchens with blue cabinetry in the past, after all it is my favorite color. It has been awhile though, so today I have rounded up some more  amazing kitchens with cottage style that also incorporate blue in  the design. source The kitchen above and the one below have white upper cabinets and soft shades of blue on the lower ones. This is a nice way to use blue without going overboard or ending up with something that you would get tired of quickly. source source Finding the right shade of blue would be key and using a lot of white and wood tones along with it creates a beautiful and timeless look. source source Isn't the kitchen above just so very unique? It has sort of a french country feeling but in an updated way. Wish there was a better picture of the script that's on the wall  on the right. source This kitchen is from Remodelondo la Casa and I've always thought the w

AFFORDABLE WALL DECOR

Hi Everyone, One of the things I find the most difficult about decorating is finding wall decor that I like and is also affordable. That is one of the main things that I am always on the hunt for and sometimes I have to come up with some creative ideas. Just yesterday, I found this beautiful image of a  white hydrangea at The Graphics Fairy . The Graphics Fairy I printed it out in a size that would fit in a frame that  I already had.  I think it looks so pretty in the simple white frame. I'm probably going to hang it in our bedroom. I'm making a few small changes in there and I will show you when it's completed. This star is actually from the garden section of our local Meijer store.  It was originally silver metal and I spray painted it white. I have seen a lot of people decorate with bread boards. This one fit perfectly in the narrow space between my  cabinet and window and I love the warmth of the wood.  I love th

Family Room Reveal

Hello Everyone! I've been meaning to post about our updated family room for a very long time and I'm  finally doing it - yeah!! I had been ready to replace our brown leather furniture for a while and when a new Ikea opened very close to us last summer, I jumped at the chance to take a good look at their slipcovered furniture. Originally the plan was to buy another sofa and loveseat like we had but when I  saw the Ektorp sectional on the showroom floor at Ikea, I was sold.   It just seemed so cozy and I could really envision it in our family room. As you can see, we purchased the sectional with the white slipcover. You just can't beat the prices at Ikea and the quality is definitely good enough for us. I'm at a point where I don't want to buy expensive furniture that I feel like I have to keep forever.   We even had the sofa delivered and they took away the old sofa and loveseat  for a very small fee. We purchased this dre
